LEST WE FORGET...
those that have past and those that have lived on...
"WAR IS AN AVALANCHE" is a multimedia song-cycle written by award-winning Canadian composer / pianist & now Waiheke local John Mackay.
The music is a 'must-experience' as it is too eclectic to describe. It drives through all possible genres including Turkish folk music. The work was inspired by and is based on letters written by soldiers based in Gallipoli and their families which Mackay has adapted for his compositions. The 75-minute long program consists of nine songs, each of them telling an individual story and yet all of them reinforcing the main theme: being human. The pieces will be taking you through all emotions possible ranging from regret, fear, doubt, longing and horror to lust, hope, fun and love, of course.
And because Mackay likes to spread his wings and cross over, rather than staying in one genre, he and the production team have created a show made to tickle not just your ears but ALL of your senses.
Aside from the music, you also will be taken on a visual journey with original photographs being projected onto a backdrop, rendered by Island artist Bruce Woods.
And while the lyrics themselves are heart-rending enough, we are honoured to have gotten another Waihekean icon on board. Pat Urlich, vocalist and musician, will be narrating throughout the show, setting the mood for each piece by reading excerpts from original letters and explaining the background.
